Future PSP releases; Time rewind in computer emulators

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

ColEm will be the next emulator to be brought up to the latest version of the PSP library. It will also include the ‘time rewind’ feature found in several other emulators.

I have not completely given up on Castaway PSP (I’m still poking it from time to time), but I am rather running out of options and patience.

For those of you wondering if/when the ‘rewind’ feature will make it to other emulators, especially computer emulators such as fMSX and Fuse, the issue is as follows.

RACE! PSP version 2.16 released

Saturday, April 4th, 2009

New in this version:

  • Time Rewind feature: map ‘Special: Rewind’ to any PSP button in the Controls menu to enable
  • Save state format has changed: RACE! PSP will still read the older save state format, but loading will be slightly slower
  • Not a new feature, but the documentation now includes a section on how to have RACE! PSP load a BIOS ROM file (instead of using the customized hardcoded version)

Time rewind works for approximately 18 seconds of gameplay, and is disabled by default. See documentation for more information.

I’m noting the BIOS support feature (it’s actually been there all along), because I’ve seen folks actually request it. Note, however, that I don’t recommend you make use of it, unless you have good reason to – emulation with the “real” BIOS is largely untested, thus unreliable.

SMS Plus PSP version 1.2.55 released

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

SMS Plus PSP now includes the Time Rewind feature I mentioned earlier. To enable it, map any button to ‘Special: Rewind’. The feature alone takes up 85% of PSP’s available memory, and I’m unsure what ramifications this might have for certain configurations, but if you come across problems, let me know.

Approximately 20 seconds of recent gameplay are saved; saving is done once every five frames.

SMS Plus PSP to go back in time

Friday, January 9th, 2009

If you’re a fan of classic console emulators on PSP, you have no doubt heard of DaveX — he’s well-known for his nifty mods for emulators like NesterJ, and most recently, PicoDrive. These mods are the time rewind and mirror features, which rewind emulation (similar to Braid), and flip the screen horizontally.

Dave  is responsible for the popular mod of SMS Plus PSP,  and he recently agreed to let me use the time rewind code in the official distribution of the emulator, as well as any other emulators. Look forward to the next version of SMS Plus with this feature included.

Special thanks to Dave for the clever feature, and for agreeing to let me use it elsewhere.
