On partial wake lock, increased battery use

Thursday, December 16th, 2010

Several people are leaving comments about increased battery, and partial wake lock usage. This is normal, and is a by-product of the message checking service, which normally runs for about 10-25 seconds (on 3G or WiFi), then shuts down, until the next update period.

Spark does not keep a perpetual wake lock – if it is, then something is likely seriously wrong – please get in touch with me if this is the case.

Note that if you have a slow connection, a five-minute checking period is likely to drain your battery very quickly – I recommend a duration of 30 minutes, or more. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to have Spark work reliably without a partial wake lock – the service is usually killed off long before the update starts.

Nonetheless, another release will be out shortly that should improve wake lock management in case of severe errors.

Market QR codeThis update adds a feature that’s been requested since Spark was first released – Message Notifications. Since they’re disabled by default, to enable notifications for existing accounts, go to Account Settings, where you can also customize the ringtone.

If you’re not sure which ringtone to use, you can get some ideas from Major Nelson’s weblog, where you can download the longed-for Achievement Unlocked, as well as other assorted Xbox sound effects.

Download from Android Market.

And now for something completely different…

One of the best things about having a smartphone is being able to use one’s own sound effects and tunes as notification sound effects (“notifications”) and ringtones – without having to pay some sleazy company for the privilege.

I’ve lost no time in turning some of my favorite video game sounds into ringtones for my Android phone, so for those of you who don’t mind looking like an overgrown kid in a room full of strangers, I offer my “notification” and ringtone collection, so far.

Notifications include Start Tune (King’s Valley 2, MSX), Coin Pickup (Super Mario Brothers, NES), Ring Pickup (Sonic the Hedgehog, Genesis) and Heart Pickup (Vampire Killer, MSX). Ringtones are Start Tune (Antarctic Adventure, MSX), Level 1 Tune (King’s Valley 2, MSX) and Coda (SD Snatcher, MSX). They’ve been recorded using OpenMSX, Gens32 and NesterJ.

And if chiptunes float your boat, I can’t recommend Kohina enough.
