Spark 360 now available on iOS

January 26th, 2012

For the last few months, I’ve been working on an iOS version of Spark 360, and it’s now available in the App Store. It includes almost all the features of the Android version, except widgets (iOS has no concept of widgets) and notifications. iPad support should be added shortly.

Features include:

  • Xbox Live profile information
  • Game history and achievements
  • Text messaging (for Gold accounts)
  • Beacon setting and responding
  • Friends list management
  • List of recent players
  • Game details and screenshots
  • Xbox Live service status

Please see screenshots below. You can download Spark 360 for iOS at the App Store.

ICS fixes coming

January 26th, 2012

I’m currently working on a number of fixes for Android 4/Ice Cream Sandwich, which should improve Spark 360′s stability on the new platform. Android has received several core changes in ICS, which are causing all sorts of issues, ranging from annoyances to crashes.

Expect also various improvements to Spark 360, including better tablet support, as well as an updated UI. Spark Trophies should follow with a UI redesign shortly afterward.

Look forward to a release some time later this week, or early next week.

Happy Holidays

December 25th, 2011

I’m currently investigating odd message list errors on Xbox Live, so if you’re affected, please contact me by emailing the address on Android Market. There seem to be two seemingly unrelated causes for the errors – in one case, Xbox Live web site itself crashes and is unable to load your messages; in another, Spark alone crashes. While the first case is something that I can’t fix until Xbox Live itself is fixed, one of Spark’s users has noticed that deleting messages with images fixes the problem in the second case. I’m still investigating probable cause, but since I don’t have an Xbox camera, I’m unable to test – if you have one and can send a picture message, please drop me a line.

Depending how well things go, I should have another app announcement in the next few weeks.

Spark 360 version 4.30 out now

December 7th, 2011

The latest version of Spark 360 v4.30 is now out on Android Market. It includes all the changes I mentioned earlier, as well as a fix for the updated Live System Status.

The latest version is a considerable jump, as it’s now compiled for the Honeycomb (Android 3.0), with compatibility provisions for Donut (1.6) and higher (earlier releases were always compiled for 1.6). As a result, you may encounter problems when you upgrade to 4.30 – if you do, please uninstall, then install Spark 360 again (this happens occasionally whenever platform targets change).

If you receive network errors please sign in to http://live.xbox.com/ to review and agree to the latest Xbox Live Terms of Service – for once, it appears that the shoe is on the other foot :).

Spark 360 release coming soon

December 6th, 2011

In the next day or so, a new version of Spark 360 will be available on Android Market. This update is likely to be one of the most significant to date, as it will finally target Android 3.0 (as well as earlier versions, up to 1.6), natively. While the difference may not be readily obvious, Spark 360 has been considerably overhauled to properly support tablets, and the next release will include a decent landscape mode for the Games List (others will soon follow), as well as the ubiquitous Action Bar:

Additional changes are a new, tighter list layout, game box art in the Friends List and initial support for beacons. Create your own beacons by pressing the beacon icon on the appropriate game in the Games list, or open a friend’s profile to view their beacons, and/or respond to beacon (for Xbox Live Gold accounts). Finally, this release will also include a number of bug fixes, and stability improvements.

Spark 360 version 4.16 now on Market

November 11th, 2011

This version primarily adds compatibility for the latest Live web interface. It also adds a couple of features, namely Game totals for the Achievement list, and improved image caching (previously, thumbnails would occasionally refuse to load).

PLEASE NOTE that depending on your provider, it may take a while until you can actually download it. Because the Market app occasionally caches old APK’s, make sure that you install the latest version (4.16) – if it happens to install an older version, uninstall, clear your Market cache, then reinstall.

Thanks for your patience.

Changes coming to Xbox.com

November 9th, 2011

Please note that as reported on the Xbox blog, changes are coming to xbox.com in the next few days which may break Spark 360 for a time (as that’s where Spark gets its information). I’ll do my best to keep the app’s brokenness period to a minimum, but depending on the changes, it may be a while before an update will be available for download from Market. When that happens, I’ll post an update here.

UPDATE It has happened (11/10/11). Please be patient
