Spark Trophies future uncertain; June 15th and compatibility

Sunday, May 29th, 2011

I apologize for the lack of weblog updates lately. Time for side projects has been steadily dwindling as of late, and even something as basic as throwing together a couple of descriptive lines on a website seems to require time I can’t much afford.

Since the last post, there have been at least two or three updates to Spark Trophies and Spark 360 – I haven’t posted about them here, because Android Market already does a decent job at notifying users of new updates. I will most likely stop posting about each and every update here – I will, however, randomly post on stuff of interest, as I’m about to do.

PSN and the US server

Monday, March 21st, 2011

PSN US’s recent changes (around March 20, 2011) have made PSN US account support in Spark Trophies all but useless. Because trophy data is now in the form of images, Spark Trophies must make several round-trips to the server to pull trophy counts from your account. This is most dramatically noticeable when viewing the friends list – the original (pre-March 21st) implementation made n+1 roundtrips to gather friend information (1 for the full friend list, 1 for detailed data on each friend). Now it must make n*2 + 1 (one for the full friend list, two for each friend, one to pull status information, one to pull trophy data).

So with that in mind, I’d like to refer you to PSN’s considerably more competently designed European server, which requires a single trip to pull your Friends list statistics. As of right now, I no longer recommend using the US server; although if you’ve never used eu.playstation.com before, you may have to migrate your web account first (if you’re a US user, this is a one-time deal, and you can do this easily by logging on to http://eu.playstation.com/. Once your account has been migrated, delete your account in Trophies, and re-add it, using PSN EU in the Server Region selection. As an added bonus, you will also be able to see the last time your friends signed on.

Trophy counts broken

Monday, March 21st, 2011

Recent changes to the US PSN site have broken the trophy counts for Spark Trophies. Rather than issue a quick fix, I decided to finish the pending work on the upcoming version, which will include better Android integration for the app. So if you’re seeing your trophy counts zeroed, please don’t panic, a fix should be out within a day.

Cause of Spark 360 bug found; new Spark PS features

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

I’ve finally found the source of a major headache and at least four 1-star ratings for Spark 360. The bug surfaces as follows:

  1. User attempts to add a new account
  2. During the email address/password entry phase, user provides incorrect email address or password
  3. User presses Back, corrects the error, validation succeeds
  4. User presses Done, account is saved incorrectly, causes errors when user begins browsing

New Spark 360 design details

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

As I mentioned in the previous post, Spark 360 will be getting a much-needed facelift in the next version.

While I’m not much of a designer, my goal was to give the app a more Xbox-y feel, and improve some of the accessibility elements. Work is still not 100% complete, but a release should be forthcoming some time this week.

On the subject of PSP updates

Friday, December 31st, 2010

I would like to use this post to dispose with the elephant in the room (or the weblog, as it were) – it’s becoming more and more obvious that my PSP pursuits are going to have to take a back seat to my work on the Android apps; at least for a while.

I know several of you are waiting for an updated version of VICE, as well as updates on my promise to work on an Atari ST emulator – hopefully I will eventually have enough time to address them. I’d love to say “hang in there,” but I’m not completely certain of where things are heading exactly, and at this point I’d hate to make promises that I can’t keep. For those that keep the dream alive, thanks for your patience – I hope to not let it go unrewarded.

Gamercard widget coming to Spark 360

Friday, December 24th, 2010

Next release of Spark 360 will bring the second most requested feature – widgets. Initial release will have the standard “gamercard” widget; subsequent releases may have additional ones.

No exact date on the release, but shouldn’t be much longer – mostly working out the odd kinks.
