Spark 360 version 4.30 out now

Wednesday, December 7th, 2011

The latest version of Spark 360 v4.30 is now out on Android Market. It includes all the changes I mentioned earlier, as well as a fix for the updated Live System Status.

The latest version is a considerable jump, as it’s now compiled for the Honeycomb (Android 3.0), with compatibility provisions for Donut (1.6) and higher (earlier releases were always compiled for 1.6). As a result, you may encounter problems when you upgrade to 4.30 – if you do, please uninstall, then install Spark 360 again (this happens occasionally whenever platform targets change).

If you receive network errors please sign in to http://live.xbox.com/ to review and agree to the latest Xbox Live Terms of Service – for once, it appears that the shoe is on the other foot :).

Spark 360 release coming soon

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

In the next day or so, a new version of Spark 360 will be available on Android Market. This update is likely to be one of the most significant to date, as it will finally target Android 3.0 (as well as earlier versions, up to 1.6), natively. While the difference may not be readily obvious, Spark 360 has been considerably overhauled to properly support tablets, and the next release will include a decent landscape mode for the Games List (others will soon follow), as well as the ubiquitous Action Bar:

Additional changes are a new, tighter list layout, game box art in the Friends List and initial support for beacons. Create your own beacons by pressing the beacon icon on the appropriate game in the Games list, or open a friend’s profile to view their beacons, and/or respond to beacon (for Xbox Live Gold accounts). Finally, this release will also include a number of bug fixes, and stability improvements.

Spark 360 version 4.16 now on Market

Friday, November 11th, 2011

This version primarily adds compatibility for the latest Live web interface. It also adds a couple of features, namely Game totals for the Achievement list, and improved image caching (previously, thumbnails would occasionally refuse to load).

PLEASE NOTE that depending on your provider, it may take a while until you can actually download it. Because the Market app occasionally caches old APK’s, make sure that you install the latest version (4.16) – if it happens to install an older version, uninstall, clear your Market cache, then reinstall.

Thanks for your patience.

Changes coming to Xbox.com

Wednesday, November 9th, 2011

Please note that as reported on the Xbox blog, changes are coming to xbox.com in the next few days which may break Spark 360 for a time (as that’s where Spark gets its information). I’ll do my best to keep the app’s brokenness period to a minimum, but depending on the changes, it may be a while before an update will be available for download from Market. When that happens, I’ll post an update here.

UPDATE It has happened (11/10/11). Please be patient

New Spark 360 and Trophies releases

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

Since the release of Trophies over a year ago, Spark 360 and Trophies have been completely standalone applications – yet for the last couple of months, I’ve been wanting to streamline their operation, to somehow allow the two to access each other’s data transparently, but securely. Today’s releases do just that – for those who have both Trophies and 360 installed, either application can manage the other’s accounts – view, add, edit, or delete them. To get most functionality, please make sure you have the latest versions of both – you can grab Spark 360 v4.00 and Spark Trophies v2.50 from Android Market.

Recent Xbox Live hacks

Joystiq and Ars have recently reported of a spate of Xbox Live hacks which revolve around stolen points, changed passwords, and, oddly enough, FIFA games. While I have no idea if these are related my earlier post, and no additional information seems to be available about the “FIFA” hacks, I would like to take this moment to mention again the importance of using good passwords and being wary of pirated software. The legitimate versions of Spark Trophies and Spark 360 do not funnel your account information – they communicate solely with PlayStation Network and Xbox Live, respectively, and are therefore about as secure as your phone’s web browser.

Tablet preview

Sunday, September 25th, 2011

I’ve been working on proper tablet (Honeycomb) support in Spark for a while now, and while the work is still not complete, here’s a sneak preview of the first release.

So why no release yet? I’ve largely been struggling with the new lifecycle model of Fragments – the modular views introduced in Honeycomb. While the model is not very different from the usual, when dual-pane views, tabs and device rotation are thrown into the mix, things become somewhat problematic – panes occasionally get out of sync, resulting in all sorts of annoying visual glitches. This, coupled with the fact that Google still refuses to release Honeycomb source makes figuring things out.. difficult, at best.

In any case, I’m still working on it, and while I still don’t have a release date, do expect a bugfix release within the next week. Among other things, there should be a fix for the Xbox Server Status tool.

Spark, piracy, and account security

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

I’ve been meaning to post something about Spark and piracy for a while now, but I’ve been unsure of whether that would be a good idea – I’ve been avoiding unnecessarily advertising the fact that Spark is (at this point) rampantly pirated. However, I’ve been getting an alarming amount of Market comments recently that claim that Spark has somehow “hacked” their Xbox Live account – which is not only patently false, but also impossible.

There are many possible ways that one can hack an Xbox Live account – including brute force attacks on the site, and guessing of simple, or easy to guess passwords. My assumption, for the sake of brevity of this article is that you use good, difficult to guess passwords – and if you don’t, you should. See Change Passwords for hints on picking a good password.

That said, I know for fact that a large number of people use illegitimate versions of the app. This is backed by the fact that sales of the app spike considerably whenever Xbox Live makes changes that break Spark in short term, and Google search results. Often, people who use a pirated copy of the app end up liking it, then purchasing the legitimate copy. This scares me most of all, because the people who just now purchased a legitimate product spent any number of weeks with a pirated version that could have been siphoning off account information for weeks or months at a time. If/when their account information is stolen, one of their first reactions is to post accusations in the comments, which unfortunately, causes a large number of other knee-jerk reactions.
