Things ssllowwinng down

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

Just a short note to let you folks know that things are likely to be a bit slow in the foreseeable future. I haven’t had much time to work on PSP development lately, and this trend doesn’t seem to be improving much. Until further notice, and unless things drastically change, I consider SMS Plus AdHoc more or less abandoned – if anyone is interested in continuing it, go for it – if you’re particularly successful, I’ll even add it to the main development branch.

For a while, if there are changes, they are likely to be smaller in nature and scattered – smaller upgrades and bug fixes, mostly. I also want to note that the forum is likely to be removed soon; any existing suggestions and bug reports will be retained; new suggestions will not be accepted for a while, though bug reports are always welcome. If you’d like to retain any posts, please do so before they’re removed.

Small psptoolchain note

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

Because I’m still getting questions on compiling psptoolchain on Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex), I should note that the latest version of psptoolchain from the trunk of the SVN repository fixes the compile-time ‘buffer overflow’ error, by forcing the compiler to use GCC 4.2.

Make sure you have all the prerequisites before compiling, including GCC 4.2 — the default installation of GCC on Ubuntu uses 4.3. Both 4.2 and 4.3 can be installed simultaneously. When installing, use the psptoolchain-sudo script.

I should also mention that you’ll get far better help by asking the developers of psptoolchain, by posting in the ps2dev forums.

SMS Plus PSP version 1.2.55 released

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

SMS Plus PSP now includes the Time Rewind feature I mentioned earlier. To enable it, map any button to ‘Special: Rewind’. The feature alone takes up 85% of PSP’s available memory, and I’m unsure what ramifications this might have for certain configurations, but if you come across problems, let me know.

Approximately 20 seconds of recent gameplay are saved; saving is done once every five frames.

SMS Plus PSP to go back in time

Friday, January 9th, 2009

If you’re a fan of classic console emulators on PSP, you have no doubt heard of DaveX — he’s well-known for his nifty mods for emulators like NesterJ, and most recently, PicoDrive. These mods are the time rewind and mirror features, which rewind emulation (similar to Braid), and flip the screen horizontally.

Dave  is responsible for the popular mod of SMS Plus PSP,  and he recently agreed to let me use the time rewind code in the official distribution of the emulator, as well as any other emulators. Look forward to the next version of SMS Plus with this feature included.

Special thanks to Dave for the clever feature, and for agreeing to let me use it elsewhere.

openMSX 0.7 (not PSP) now out

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

This isn’t really PSP related, but openMSX has just been updated to version 0.7. New release includes save states, and a host of other nifty features to an already great MSX emulator.

Fuse PSP version 0.10.0.1 released (and Happy New Year, naked weirdos)

Thursday, January 1st, 2009

Fuse PSP 0.10.0.1 is now out. New in this version:

  • Fuse updated to version 0.10.0.1
  • Miscellaneous bug fixes
  • Support for compressed disks (see documentation)
  • Option to enable/disable sound while tape is loading (only works with Fastloading disabled)
  • Option to enable/disable “Issue 2” keyboard support
  • Extra button options – Square/Cross/Circle/Triangle with L or R trigger held down
  • Option to enable/disable tape fastloading (some games do not load correctly when enabled)
  • Virtual keyboard: emulation should not lag as much when virtual keyboard is displayed
  • Virtual keyboard: classic display mode (show when R held down), or toggle mode (show/hide when R is pressed)
  • Added state exporting to other versions of Fuse – press Start while the ‘Save/Load’ tab is selected—an SNA file will be written to the snapshot directory
  • Tape autoloading (not to be confused with save state autoloading, already in the previous release)
  • Snapshots are now saved into PSP’s own PHOTO directory (/PSP/PHOTO), and can be viewed in PSP’s image viewer
  • File selector snapshots – while browsing for games with the file selector, pause momentarily to display the first snapshot for the game

If you’re upgrading from an earlier version, I recommend backing up your save states, configuration files and ROM’s, and copying them to the new folders — as opposed to copying the new files over your current Fuse PSP directory layout.
